Saturday Blast! introduces Boston middle school students to the basics in drawing and painting. Using different materials, including pencil, charcoal, pastels and watercolors, students follow a curricula developed by the Saturday Blast! team. The youth work on projects appropriate to their age group, and all projects can be completed within each three-hour session. Each session explores new projects aimed at fostering thoughtful studio habits, including brainstorming, visual problem solving, critiquing, studio set up/break down, and proper care and usage of materials.
Mentors engage participants in the collaborative art-making process through exciting projects. Past projects include attaching canvasses to the wall for participants to paint as a mural, and developing large-scale colored pencil drawings on massive sketchbook paper. We accommodate youth who prefer working independently, but we encourage collaboration, working as a team, and having a social and interactive experience. The resulting pieces are always a fantastic mixture of talent and imagination. Collaborations increase young people’s confidence and help participants build off each others’ ideas and strengths.
Saturday Blast! runs throughout the school year from 11am-2pm every Saturday. We provide snacks and instruction from experienced artist mentors. Interested middle school students should commit to 8-week sessions, to get the full benefit of the program. We only require a $20 registration fee, and provide scholarships to the first 50 interested students. There is still space availability, so please let us know if you know students interested in participating!
Saturday Blast! will start up again in early 2012. Hope to see you then.
